You Can’t Get Rich by Taking Surveys

You just might make a few bucks though. Not enough to quit your day job, but enough to buy a few pizzas every month

Survey site ads are ridiculous these days. With promises of $200 surveys and full-time wages, it seems pretty tempting. After doing a little research, I’m going to set the record straight. I hate to disappoint you (well, not really), but you’re not going to retire early by taking surveys.

To start

A couple months ago, I made up a few email addresses and joined some survey programs. All but one ended up being deadbeats that never sent me any surveys. The one remaining company will be the subject of this article.

I joined Opinion Outpost with a healthy amount of skepticism, so I was pretty surprised when the surveys started rolling in. True, I wasn’t making a ton of money (around $2 per survey at 5-10 completed surveys per month), but money is money, right? I got my first check and used it to pay for a tank of gas. Like I said, not a ton of money, but not bad. Each survey generally takes five to ten minutes to complete. If you’ve got nothing better to do online, you may want to give it a shot.

Their system is by no means perfect. For one, I’m not qualified for about 70% of the surveys I receive. They recently started giving $0.10 for each survey you’re not qualified for, but it’s still pretty disappointing (especially because I wasn’t qualified for a $50 survey). Another annoying problem is that one of their sponsor companies does not allow surveys to be taken in Firefox. If you happen to load it up in Firefox, too bad, you’re locked out of the survey forever.

Why I still use them

Sometimes I have nothing to do at work. It helps pass the time. Plus, if you click on the links above, you’ll notice that they have an affiliate program :)

The bottom line

Don’t get suckered into believing that you can make thousands by taking surveys online. You’ll just be disappointed.

On the other hand, if you know that you’re not going to make more than $50/month, and you like sharing your opinions with people, I’d recommend using Opinion Outpost. If you wait out the initial drought of surveys while they figure out your interests, you’ll end up making enough to buy a few pizzas each month.
