These Guys aren’t Getting Rich

Everybody loves online auctions, and everybody loves finding great deals on expensive products. Most of us turn to eBay for that sort of thing, but that hasn’t discouraged these guys. SilverTag Auctions is another auction site being dwarfed by eBay, but I wouldn’t ignore it just yet. You see, this isn’t your standard auction site. To win, instead of bidding the highest, you have to bid the lowest.

Yeah, that’s right, the lowest price wins. The trouble is, that price has to be unique. Sorry guys, you can’t all bid $0.01 and hope to win. Sound like too much work? Let me put it in perspective for you: Take a look at their auction history. If you’re too lazy to look, I’ll highlight some of the finer points:

  • iPod Shuffles for under $7
  • 50″ HDTV for under $150
  • iMac 20″ for $80

I’ll bet you’re interested now. There is a catch though: In order to keep the site from collapsing under the weight of millions of wild guess bids, you’re limited to 20 bids per day. If you’re way too high or low, or your bid is not unique, the site will give you a hint on where to go. For $9.97 per month, you can upgrade to 100 bids per day, but that costs money so that’s a big no-no for me.

The items

So who in their right mind would list their items on this site? Well, this is a not-for-profit organization. 100% of the proceeds of each auction go to charity. I assume any fees from the auctions are used to pay for hosting costs, so these guys are going a really good thing.

On the other hand, it looks like there’s only one auction per day. Definitely not a firestorm of activity, but still worth taking part in.

Happy bidding

It’s free to sign up and bid, so there’s no reason not to join. The auction ending today is for a 20″ Apple iMac, so once my bids reset, I’ll be all over that. Good luck to anyone else who decides to participate.
