It’s Pointless Without Your Health

Sorry, no discussion of websites, marketing fads, and blog clones today. I’m going to be talking about the real world.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my health lately. No, I’m not sick, and I certainly don’t have any room to complain in the physique department (6′2″, 155 lbs isn’t bad). I’ve actually been more concerned about the choices I’m making now and the long-term consequences they’ll have.

I am, of course, referring to my diet. Right now, it’s not ideal. I’m not going to post pictures of my meals like John Chow does, but I will summarize the main parts of my diet:

  • Ramen
  • Diet Mountain Dew (trying to cut back on my sugar intake)
  • Hamburger Helper
  • Cheerios
  • Pizza
  • Oreos
  • Daily multivitamin shake

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the early-20s blogger diet. I’m going to be dead by 40 if I keep eating like this. Even if I do manage to get rich, I won’t be around to enjoy it. So, in order to improve my diet, I’ve outlined a few rules for the coming year:

  • Eggs or oatmeal for breakfast every day (Non-sugary cereal if I’m in a hurry)
  • Actual real meat with dinner (chicken breasts, grilled cuts of beef, etc)
  • Beans and/or veggies with lunch and dinner every day

Another goal that I have, which I consider way out of reach, is to break my caffeine addiction. Yes, addiction. I don’t just like it, I need it. If I go for an entire day without a drop of caffeine, I get crippling, debilitating headaches. Then I sleep for an average of 14 hours a day for the next week, and am generally cranky and unlikable when I’m awake. If you haven’t guessed by now, I’ve gone through caffeine detox before. Every time I manage to kick the habit, I do pretty well for a few months and then it’s back to the bottle (of Mountain Dew. Or Vault. Or Red Bull.). I blame classes and late-night study sessions. Anyway, right now I’m trying to back it down to around 100 mg a day (two Mountain Dews), and I’m trying to get most of that from tea. We’ll see how that works out.

Speaking of working out, I’d still like to join the 1000 push ups club. More on that eventually.

As you can see, I’m not very good at being healthy. What do you guys do to eat well? I’d appreciate some pointers.

Side note: I’ll be traveling home tonight. If Monday’s entry is late or missing, I’m probably having problems with my parents’ Internet connection.

I eat like that ,and I am 33 . I haven’t died or had a heart attack yet. Actually - no diet drinks , a lot less Mountain Dew than I used to have. I like Red Bull , but I dont drink it much anymore. Just when I really need a boost. I like coffee , and drink 4-5 cups a day.

Ramen has to be good for you though. There are millions of college students that have survived on it. $1 for 4 of the good stuff , can’t go wrong.

Want a simple, expedient way to include raw organic veggies in your diet?

Get a Blendtec or Vitamix juicer and add some raw veggies,
carrots, celery, cucumber, tomato, beet, squash, swiss chard, spinach, green peppers etc for the base.

Then add some spices for flavor, (preferably raw) cilantro, dill, ginger, jalapeno, peg of garlic, and most importantly sea salt or himalayan salt along with 1-2 cups of filtered water

Next, add half of a fruit of some kind. Preferably apple or mango. It balances out the uggh factor of raw veggie juice. Do not add any other sweeteners ie honey. It will just kill the vibrant taste of the juice

If you don’t have an aversion to avocado, add half a Hass avocado for creaminess.

So there you go, blend it up in a blendtec on the juice cycle or in a vitamix with the manual controls and a minute later you should have a nice puke colored, frothy concoction that doesn’t taste half bad and is good for you.

If you can have this instead of a regular lunch or dinner, then you’re on your way to a major dietary change for the better.
