You Can’t Get Rich if you Let Your Bad Habits Control You

Alright, I’m doing it. I’m going to kick the habit. I’ve mentioned before that I have an serious addiction to caffeine (I ingest 300+ mg daily). If I don’t get my daily dose, I get incredibly ‘foggy’ and have severe, pulsating headaches. I’ve been dealing with this on and off for the past few years and this time, I’m done. I’ve decided to go cold turkey. No backing down to lower doses, I’m just dropping the habit.

Mountain Dew

Plus I have 200 aspirin sitting right here on my desk. That always helps.

What does this have to do with not getting rich? Well, for starters, there’s all the money I spend on Mountain Dew and Vault each week. Then there’s the fact that I can’t concentrate on anything if I go for more than 3 waking hours without a can of green caffeinated liquid. Finally, I think this will help me in the long run with peer-to-peer interactions. I tend to get cranky if I’m un-caffeinated.

You know what that means, right? This week will be packed with angry, cranky posts that will take me hours to write due to lack of concentration and headaches! Good times.

Anybody else have any bad habits they’d like to drop? If you’re not sure, take a look at how much it’s costing you each week, and then ask your significant other if you’d be better off without it. A high $$$ value plus a ‘yes’ from a girlfriend equals a habit you need to drop. Make sure that you have someone who can hold you accountable, though. Otherwise, it’s too easy to slip back into the old routine.

On a related note, I need a new signature drink. This blog used to be powered by Vault, but that’s going to change. Any suggestions?

I love my caffeine. I sit at my desk and drink coffee. When I really need an up , its a can or two of Red Bull.

I think going cold turkey , might be a bit hard. You have to have something else to take up for the lack of caffeine. You might have to start doing a lot of exercise. I’ll just keep drinking my coffee. It keeps me happy.

I’ve gone cold turkey before - interesting experience. Then again, I was only drinking about 3 cups of coffee per day.
I suggest “powered by WATER!” It’s possibly the healthiest drink.

Water is by far the best alternative to Sodas. No sugar, goes through you in seconds, and always good to have. I suggest getting a water bottle and just keeping it by your desk at all times.

There’s also an alternative I use to coffee, which I call “Coffee without the caffeine”. Basically you get some hot water, add 1 1/2 spoonfuls of sugar, add some powdered creamer until it becomes a pile, then stir it together and drink. It’s actually very good.

You could also try eating fruit. The energy from the fruit will make up for the loss of caffeine (somewhat).
