About this site...

I can't get rich online and neither can you. Topics include why you won't get rich with your blog, ideas you wish you had thought of, and other Internet phenomena.

Don't kid yourself...

You want to get rich with your blog? Maybe you think Adsense will let you retire? Sorry, it's not going to happen.

Doing it Wrong

A few weeks ago, I decided to start a video blog. The niche? Mario Paint videos. I really liked Mario Paint when I was a kid, and I’m a music geek, so it fit well. Anyway, I threw up some content, some Adsense code, and waited. Unsurprisingly, nothing happened.

Today, I got lucky. I’ve been watching my Adsense statistics all day, and so far the site has received over 12,000 impressions. I must have gotten stumbled something fierce. I really won’t know until tomorrow’s analytics statistics come in, but in the meantime, I’ve been watching today’s Adsense income like a hawk. You’ll never guess how much I’ve made.
Epic adsense failure

At last, I can retire and live the good life.

Obviously, I could have capitalized on this little traffic boom a lot better. There are a few things that I really should have considered:

  1. Some Adsense ads are crap. Mario ringtones? Yeah, people might click on that, but “Mario concert tickets” are a little far-flung. Also, while I’m talking about Adsense, I should have realized that most of these hits are probably coming from Stumbleupon, which means that the visitors are at least slightly Internet-savvy. That means that none of them are going to click on Adsense ads. Oh well.
  2. Targeted ads are better. Hours after the traffic boom started, I put in an additional ad, one for Gamefly. No conversions yet, but think about how many I could have gotten if I’d put up the ad 10,000 hits ago.
  3. That site doesn’t work in IE7. Oops. Depending on how traffic looks over the next few days, I might switch Wordpress themes.
  4. Research is key. I never really expected this site to get any decent traffic, so I didn’t research potential affiliate offers. I’m a member of several affiliate programs, and that opens the doors to hundreds, if not thousands of ways to potentially make money. If I had known that I would be getting thousands of hits, I would have been better prepared.

Learn from my mistakes

When launching a new website, always take the time to prepare. Does your site work in all major browsers? Do you have targeted ads? Don’t just rely on Adsense, as I think I’ve proven that it doesn’t work for every niche. Build your site so that it looks like it gets thousands of hits per day, so that when it does, you’ll get the most out of your visitors.

You have to admit though, that’s pretty good in regards to getting 10k impressions without doing much research…and I’m assuming not much marketing either?

Well why don’t you tweak the ads a little. The ones on the right sidebar are okay but the ones on the top kinda stand out. May be try only image ads. Just try things and If you can get it right then o well it is cant get rich. :(
