I posted this on Wickedfire yesterday, but I thought I’d share it here too.

I thought I’d share a little technique that’s worked pretty well for me. Done correctly, this technique will provide you with a steady stream of original content for little to no cost.

Step 1: Pick a niche, create a blog
Let’s say you want to make a blog about Pokemon. Create a Wordpress blog, write two or three articles, and setup whatever monetization technique is your favorite.
Then, turn on user registration, and make sure that all new users are given the ‘Contributor’ role. Contributors can write and submit posts, but not publish them. You’ll have to approve any articles that you want to go live.

Step 2: Find your writers
Go to a big Pokemon forum and state that you’re hiring writers for a new site. Encourage them to signup at your blog and start writing.

Step 2.5: Give them incentive to write for you
This part is key - Say that you’ll pay your writers after every 3 posts, with increasing rates. For example, $10 for the first 3, $15 for the next 3, $25 for the next 3, etc. You’re not going to get any established writers with this method, but you might snag a few newbies with talent.

At this point, you’ll probably have a whole bunch of people signing up and writing content. Most of them will wander off after one or two articles, which equals free content for you. For the people who stick around and keep churning out content, you can either keep to your word or be a total asshole and only publish two per writer. I’d say only publish three articles from the writers that have talent and that you want to stick around.

Step 3: Umm…
There really is no step 3. If you need new writers, just put your ad on another forum. The content will keep flowing in, and you can pick and choose who you actually want to pay.

Using this method, I created a new site about 7 hours ago and have had 79 contributors sign up and submit 45 articles. Some of them are crap, most are mediocre, and a few are really good. Personally, I’d recommend contacting your awesome writers directly to encourage them to keep writing.

Lots of people make money online by writing articles, right? Trouble is, that’s a tough market to break into. You’ve got the established, well-respected guys who have tons of satisfied customers, and they can charge pretty much whatever they want. On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got the monkeys with keyboards and a thesaurus that chage $0.005 per word, driving down the average price and spewing out tons of crap. Out of sheer boredom, I decided to try to find a happy medium between the two, and possibly make a few bucks in the process.

To be an online content writer, you have to:

Be knowledgeable about a subject

Be able to effectively research a topic

Have a unique writing style

Options one and two left me with very few possible articles (and even fewer clients), so I decided to invest all of my efforts into option 3. Specifically, I decided to advertise my writing skills as an angry ranting service. For as little as $0.02/word, I would rant and rave about nearly anything, and wouldn’t you know that I ended up with a pile of orders. I even had to raise my prices a bit to stem the tide so that I could keep up with everything.

Anger is in no short supply on the Internet, so it beats me why people wanted to purchase my writing style. Still, money is good so I’m not going to argue. If you have a unique writing style, try hawking it on DP some time, you might just be surprised.

Prosper202 is incredibly awesome. If you are doing anything more than the simplest forms of PPC, you can’t afford not to use this software.

I’m aware that this is old news, but being the king of poor decisions, I put off using it until a friend of mine brought it up roughly ten thousand times in one conversation. Knowing that I had nothing to lose and an extra, useless domain kicking around, I installed it and setup some campaigns.

I know P202 has plenty of features, but if I could sum up the whole package in one awesome word, it would be this: Graphs. So many graphs. I love graphs. They show me how my campaigns are doing, which keywords and demographics are working for me, how many clicks I’m getting, what my ROI is, etc. If you’re a graphophile such as myself, that one feature would make the whole thing worth it.

Without P202, my campaigns would be nowhere near as optimized as they are now. Thanks to its reporting features, I can easily see and subsequently axe ad groups that aren’t performing well, adjust CPC, and pretty much make the most use of my money. Just as an example, I’m running a bunch of dating ads on Facebook. I created a ton of ads for a ton of demographics and let them run for a week. At the end of the week, my ROI was pretty dismal: 20%. After looking through my beautiful graphs and reports, I was able to determine which demographics were performing strongly and axed the others. After doing that, the next week I had a 96% ROI, and nearly as much profit as the previous week. Much rejoicing was had.

So, in short, go download and install Prosper202. If you don’t have an extra domain, just buy some cheap .info and stick it on there. It will more than pay for itself.

I’ll tell you what happened: It got bumped down a few rungs on my priorities ladder. First of all, I’m actually making money now. I feel less inclined to update this blog because I’m busy testing things, creating new ads, etc. Secondly, I’m in my final year of college now, and I’m busier than ever. I’m even looking into grad school at the moment, so it’s kinda hard to find time to update when I’ve got a 20 page term paper due in a week.

Believe me, I feel bad. It really feels like I’m letting my readers down (all 250ish of you. How did that happen?). I’d love to update more, but even when I find time to, I can’t come up with any ideas. I still don’t feel like I’m qualified to give anybody advice (not quite a SUPER AFFILIATE or GURU or PRO yet), and all of my hatred and vitriol is being wasted at work and in class.

In short, I don’t know what the futures holds for this site. Maybe I’ll feel compelled to start updating regularly again soon, but I really don’t know. I’d suggest heading over to Wickedfire in the meantime and searching for inspiration there.

Simple. I was just using Akismet before, and while that does an excellent job of keeping the spam out, I was still getting over 200 spams per day dumped into my queue, which I then had to scroll through to look for legitimate comments. After installing reCAPTCHA, I’m down to around 3 per day. Much easier.

If you have the same problem that I did, I’d suggest giving this plugin a try.

About three and a half months ago, I had this really nice landing page made for me and used it in a PPC campaign. I ran that one for about a month, and then turned everything off and pretty much forgot about it.

Fast-forward to last week: I received a commission from that offer. Turns out that my little abandoned LP was receiving a trickle of organic traffic. Boy, am I glad I added Google analytics to that page. I checked the page’s statistics to see what keywords were bringing the most people, did a little SEO with that data, and waited.

Two days later, my page was (and still is) ranking #1 on Yahoo for its primary keyword. That’s with 0 backlinks too (page titles can make a world of difference). That site proceeded to make me over $200 over the next few days, and I’ve decided to try and capitalize on it a bit more with some additional link building (directory subs, etc).

What can you learn from this? Always put Google analytics code on your sites, even if you’re only going to use them for paid traffic. I never expected to start ranking in that particular niche (it’s incredibly competitive), but now I’m holding the #1 spot for some pretty decent keywords.

Organic traffic is free traffic, and free money is always nice.

It sounds like there was a whole lot of misunderstandings and half-truths on both sides. I’m just glad I managed to stay out of the whole thing (go ahead, type in ‘clickbooth’ in my search bar. You know you want to). For those of you keeping score:

Here’s one of the stranger things I’ve been asked to review: Quiznos.com. I’m supposed to look at it from a design perspective, and also from the perspective of someone hoping to open a franchise.

Well, what can I say? The video box in the middle of the main page seems to be ok, but I’m not a fan of the three little pop-out video boxes below it. If I was designing the page, I’d want to make those static. Other than that, the site itself is very functional. It’s easy to find information, the nav bar is in a good place, and the color scheme works well. It’s almost like some multi-million dollar business had paid a high-end web designer to create the site or something.

From the franchise owner perspective, the layout is much more formal and subdued, dare I say “professional”? Well, that makes sense: It’s supposed to be a resource for people with lots of money who want to start a new restaurant. I guess that’s why there’s about seven miles of text over the whole site. You might not want to read that though, so go ahead and stare at all the pictures of yummy sandwiches and soup.

Honestly, I really don’t know what to say about these sites. They’re both extremely well designed. They flow well, the color scheme is perfect, and it’s easy to find information. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Well, actually I lie. I would change one little thing: The site is nowhere near politically correct enough. I mean, sure, you’ve got pictures of men and women of every color, but I’m not seeing anybody in wheelchairs. That’s a great way to get sued.

(I kid, I kid. The site’s fine)
